Abstract:
This paper proposes vegetation of uninhabitable desert regions as a novel application for space solar power (SSP). Saltwater-cooled greenhouses are currently being pilot tested as part of the Sahara Forest Project, and SSP can provide electricity to expand greenhouse network inland by continuously pumping seawater. A preliminary analysis suggests that 1GW of power can pump enough water to irrigate an area more than 1,000 km2, overcoming uphill height differences of several hundred meters. The paper also derives high -level system requirements, such as orbital requirements of the space power satellite and the hybrid architecture of space -based solar power and ground -based solar power.
