This paper proposes vegetation of uninhabitable desert regions as a novel application for space solar power (SSP). Saltwater-cooled greenhouses are currently being pilot tested as part of the Sahara Forest Project, and SSP can provide electricity to expand greenhouse network inland by continuously pumping seawater. A preliminary analysis suggests that 1GW of power can pump enough water to irrigate an area more than 1,000 km2
, overcoming uphill height differences of several hundred meters. The paper also derives high -level system requirements, such as orbital requirements of the space power satellite and the hybrid architecture of space -based solar power and ground -based solar power.
